Lyndoch and Williamstown had been long standing rivals in both the Torrens Valley Football Association and the Gawler and District Football League when they elected to merge in 1980. It was actually the second occasion on which the clubs had forged an alliance but on the previous occasion, in 1919, the arrangement was terminated after just one season.

Initially, Barossa District affiliated with the Gawler and District Football League, in which the seniors were successful in claiming a premiership in only their third season thanks to a 16.21 (117) to 9.10 (64) grand final defeat of Gawler Central. Between 1987 and 1990 the Bulldogs competed in division two of the Hills Football League. The move was an inordinate success in that they managed to procure senior grade flags in 1987 at the expense of Mount Torrens, 1988 against Kersbrook, and 1990 against Nairne Bremer.

Since 1991 Barossa District has been a member of the Barossa, Light and Gawler Football League in which it would probably be reasonable to infer that success has not come easily. However, after struggling for many years the Bulldogs have contested the last three senior grade grand finals, accounting for Freeling in both 2006 and 2007, but losing to Tanunda in 2008.
