Established in 1874, Chilwell was for many years one of the foremost clubs in the Geelong area. It was particularly strong during the 1920s when it contested four grand finals, winning those of 1922 against North Geelong and 1923 against Geelong West.

Over the years, many footballers graduated from Chilwell to Geelong in the VFL, a transition that was perhaps rendered marginally less intimidating than it might have been by the fact that both clubs wore identical navy blue and white hooped playing jumpers.
