Cohuna and Union had been rivals in the Northern and Echuca Football League (NEFL) and various precursor competitions for fifty-one seasons when they elected to amalgamate in 1996. The following year the newly merged club commenced its competitive life in a newly merged competition, the Central Murray Football League, which had arisen through the marriage of the NEFL and the Mid Murray Football League.

The Kangas were highly competitive to begin with, contesting the finals consistently, and twice, in 1998 and 2000, reaching the grand final. However, a premiership eluded them.

In recent seasons the team has struggled somewhat, even succumbing to a wooden spoon in 2005. Since then there has been noticeable improvement, however, with finals participation in the next season or so a realistic prospect.

The Kangas have enjoyed considerable success in other grades, with both the reserves and colts so far claiming four premierships.
