Exhaustive North Hobart History DVD

"From out the narrow streets and back alleyways emerged the great Redlegs teams of yesteryear."

Dan Garlick writes to advise that North Hobart has produced a comprehensive history DVD which is available for sale, priced $29.95, via the club's website at http://www.nhfc.com.au/. The DVD is entitled The Tribe - The story of the North Hobart Football Club from 1881 to 2006. It has a running time of 59 minutes + 40 minutes of extra interviews – includes player, committee and supporter interviews plus historical footage and photos. The club's history book, Never Say Die, has also been updated, and is available via the club's website.

Fantastic New(ish) Website

I was recently alerted to the existence of a fantastic website dealing in detail with the history of football in the sunshine state.  The site is called www.qldfooty.com, and is the brainchild of long-time friend of Full Points Footy and avid football historian Greg Parker.  I feel rather ashamed not to have stumbled across the site earlier, as Greg tells me it's been online since December 2008. It contains sections devoted to AFL Queensland, Brisbane Lions, the new Gold Coast club, Queensland football's Hall of Fame, plus plenty more, and is heartily recommended. If you like it (and I can't think of any reason why you wouldn't) please drop Greg a line or two saying so.

Where The Seagulls Nest

Where the Seagulls Nest DVD slip.JPG (625609 bytes)

Vin Maskell emailed me recently with information about a DVD which many visitors to Full Points Footy might well find of interest:

Where The Seagulls Nest is an eleven minute documentary made by Williamstown teenager Jesse Maskell during his VCE media studies in 2009. The documentary traces the origins of Burbank Oval and its various uses over the past 150 years. It combines archival footage and home movies as five locals who love the ground tell their stories: Williamstown Football Club general manager Brendan Curry, president Trevor Monti, ex-player Ronnie Williams, and lifelong supporters Janet Dooley and Geoff van Wyngaaden.

WG Grace, WL Floyd, street parades, athletics meetings, old scoreboards, and punch-ups with Port Melbourne supporters are all recalled in this short history. Even Ned Kelly gets a mention.

Where The Seagulls Nest can be borrowed from Williamstown Library and is also available for $15 from Seagulls Bookshop, Nelson Place (Ph: 9397 1728). It is also part of the State Library collection.

  Missing Stats

Belated Updates To The Site - Mark Two

'The Full Points Footy Encyclopedia Of Australian Football Clubs Volume Three'

Missing Stats

I'm still trying my best to update the site, but certain pieces of information are proving rather elusive. Specifically, if any one can provide me with the score in the 2009 Riverina Football League grand final between Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong and Leeton-Whitton I'd be very grateful. Ditto the leading goalkickers, with number of goals kicked, in AFL Queensland's State League, AFL Canberra's Premiership Division One, and Tasmania's Southern Football League and Northern Football League.

Belated Updates To The Site - Mark Two

If you visited the site any time in December '09 or early January this year you may have thought it appeared to be pretty well up to date, i.e. all of the major developments occurring in the 2009 season were reflected in the chronology, club and league profiles and so forth. However, if you have accessed the site since then you might have felt a little confused - where was all the updated information? Well, you can rest assured that 1) you weren't imagining things back in December or early January, the site had been more or less fully brought up to date and 2) there is a perfectly simple explanation for the disappearance of the updates - in the middle of January, in a rash moment that I still can't fully explain, I somehow inadvertently managed to delete the entire Full Points Footy website. What makes the whole thing even more irritating is that this spectacular faux pas occurred precisely as I was backing up the updated version of the site which existed on the server to my hard drive. Or at least that's what I thought. When I'd finished there was no site on the server, and the version on my hard drive was dated March 2009, which is the version I had no alternative but to upload to the server, a process which in itself did not go entirely smoothly. So I'm afraid that what you currently have is a Full Points Footy website which is nowhere near as up to date as I would like, and as if that wasn't bad enough, because of problems with uploading the replacement back up version there are numerous formatting issues which also need addressing. Rest assured, I shall do the best I can to correct and update everything as speedily as possible, but in the meantime, please accept my apologies for the less than satisfactory state of the site. Oh, and rest assured it won't happen again as I now have the entire site automatically backed up every twenty-four hours.

'All My Most Memorable Times Have Been Imagined'

  'Champions Of The Colony' Myth

'All My Most Memorable Times Have Been Imagined'

My debut novel, All My Most Memorable Times Have Been Imagined, has just been published. Whilst it is not a football novel per se, much of the action takes place in Australia, and Australian football gets more than a few extended references. You can find out more about the book at http://stores.lulu.com/fullpointsfooty. It's available in both hardcover and paperback editions.

Back

'Champions Of The Colony' Myth

As mentioned last year I am now completely convinced, thanks to the detailed research carried out by Ross Smith, that the so called 'Champion of the Colony' award never actually existed. Rather, it was a list privately and subjectively compiled in 1958 by the football historian CC Mullen. Consequently, I erased all references to the award on Full Points Footy - or at least thought I had. Ross, though, was one step ahead of me, and noticed that quite a few references in the Biographies section had slipped through the net. Needless to say, I'm indebted to Ross for pointing this out, and the offending references have been deleted. Hopefully, now, all references to the award on the site have now been removed, but with almost 3,000,000 words of text to sift through, I wouldn't bet on it. If anyone spots any such remaining references I'd be grateful to hear from them.

SA Football Companion Slightly Delayed

Owing to a combination of issues, some of my own making, others to do with the printing process, the publication of Full Points Footy's Football Companion will be delayed slightly. This is unfortunate, and a little annoying, but I'm doing all I can to speed things up. Watch this space for updates.

Champion Of The Colony Myth - An Update

It would appear that the list of alleged 'Champions of the Colony' included in various publications from the 1950s onwards was the work of noted football historian C.C. Mullen, and was based on nothing more substantive than his own research-derived opinions.

  Champion Of The Colony Myth

  Australia-Wide Football Facts And Records

Champion Of The Colony Myth

Recent research by Ross Smith, which you can access at

http://au.geocities.com/sportandhistory/football/awards/champion.html

has cast immense doubt over whether a discrete 'Champion of the Colony' award for the best Victorian footballer of each season ever existed. Consequently, I have removed all references to the award from the site. (The earliest reference I've been able to find to this alleged award is in Hugh Buggy's and Harry Bell's 1958 history of Carlton, The Carlton Story.)

Obviously, if anyone has concrete evidence that the Champion of the Colony award did in fact exist, I'd love to hear from them.

Full Speed Ahead For SA Football Companion

An unexpected and quite dramatic improvement in my health has enabled me to make some significant progress on the next Full Points Publications title, Full Points Footy's SA Football Companion, which now seems well on course for publication in late October/early November. The book is basically a 1,072 entry 'A-Z' (Aamodt to Zucker) of the key people, clubs, competitions, records and stats, important matches, events and developments and so forth from the game's one and a half century long history in the state. It's intended as a general reference rather than as the sort of book people will want to read from cover to cover. Some of the material has appeared previously on the Full Points Footy website, but a sizeable proportion of it is completely new and will remain unique to the book (i.e. it won't subsequently be added to the site).

Back

Recommended Reading

Another beneficial consequence of feeling better has been a renewed desire to bolster my meagre knowledge of the game's history. Among the sizeable swag of titles eagerly devoured over the past month or so, two stand out, and I would unreservedly and avidly recommend both of them to everyone, although getting hold of the Storer title might be difficult.

Woodville-West Torrens Football Club historian John Storer has produced a two volume, limited edition history of West Torrens, the first of which covers the period between 1897 and 1944. It's detailed, capably written, well researched and beautifully set out, and should appeal to all true fans of the game.

John Gascoyne's The Mail Medal, an updated version of  a book first published in 1996, is similarly exhaustive and magnificently presented as well as being - from this reader's perspective at any rate - almost 'unputdownable'. Again, it's heartily recommended, and unlike the Storer title should be relatively easy to track down.

New Club Profiles

Profiles of Bacchus Marsh, Coorparoo Kings, East Point, Lake Wendouree, Newtown and Chilwell, and Warrnambool have recently been added.

Thanks to Joshua Ryan for supplying me with details about the Coorparoo Kings, and for clarifying the situation vis-à-vis that club's relationship with the original Coorparoo Football Club in the process.

I'm also indebted to Newtown and Chilwell's historian Christine Kelly for providing information about her club's history as well as the photograph which appears in the profile.

Finally, Len Colquhoun is to blame (again!) for kindly supplying me with much of the information that appears in the entry on Warrnambool.

  New Portuguese Website

Northern Areas FA and Alberton FL  Club Profiles

New Portuguese Website

Football's appeal continues to win it new friends across the globe, not least in Europe. Even in countries with no history of playing the game, interest is being generated by TV, the internet, and the efforts of dedicated aficionados such as David Valente from Portugal, whose footy website at http://futebolaustraliano.googlepages.com/home has just opened for business.  Whether or not you speak Portuguese I reckon you'll get a buzz from visiting the site simply because it presents so much that is familiar in what, to many, will seem an unfamiliar and unique way.

David is hopeful that Australian football, which has never previously been played in Portugal, might get off the ground in a limited way soon, perhaps in 9-a-side form utilising soccer or rugby pitches. Nearby Spain has already witnessed considerable growth in the game and looks likely to send two teams - Spain and Catalonia - to Melbourne for the International Cup later this year. It would be great if Portugal could follow suit, and I'm sure all genuine footy fans will join me in wishing David and his fellow lovers of the game the very best of fortune in their endeavours.

  Launch Of Full Points Publications

Full Points Footy 'Out Of Hibernation'

A combination of illness, internet connectivity problems and other demands on my time meant that I managed to add very little to the website over the past couple of months. However, there are plenty of new things in the pipeline.

Just by way of reminding myself where all the knobs and buttons are, and what they do, I've added profiles of 'Pat' Rodriguez and 'Nugget' Hilsz to the Biographies section.

Back in January, Max Sayer kindly provided information about the Northern Areas Football Association, which I was in the process of adding to the site when I lost my internet connection. This was a prelude to well over a month of, at best, only very spasmodic internet access, which ultimately necessitated the installation of a new telephone line. Thank fully, since then, everything has been working normally.

Launch Of Full Points Publications

It's long been my ambition to supplement the material on Full Points Footy with more enduring content, and with the imminent launch of the Full Points Publications imprint this ambition will finally be realised.

The first title to be published will be The Full Points Footy Encyclopedia Of Australian Football Clubs Volume One, which contains historical and statistical information about every club ever to have competed in any of the major designated state competitions (including by extension the AFL).

If everything proceeds according to plan the book will be published in the UK at the end of next week, and in Australia a few weeks after that. It's a 6"x9" hardback with dust-wrap containing 700 pages. Some of the content has previously appeared on the website, but there is also much that is new, including some superb (to my eyes, anyway) old photographs that have never, to the best of my knowledge, previously been published. As the title implies, this is the first of a projected series of books . Volume Two, which will cover amateur, Melbourne metropolitan, and leading country league clubs, will be published in a year's time.

Further information will be posted when it's to hand, so be sure to check back if you're interested.

  Footy Almanac A Hit

  History Of Medindie FC

Footy Almanac A Hit

There can be few better ways of tuning up for a new footy season than by tapping into the thoughts of fellow obsessives. In this respect, The Footy Almanac 2007, edited by John Harris and Paul Daffey, is tantamount to a godsend. Just prior to Christmas I was fortunate enough to be sent a copy by Rod Gillett, long time Full Points Footy subscriber and contributor, who happens to be one of the book's authors. As the title implies, the book is a chronological account of the 2007 AFL season. It contains reviews of every match, each written by one of a team - or 'Almanackery', to use the technical term - of writers of varying backgrounds, all of whom share a passion for the game. I found my reaction to the whole was pretty similar to watching an engrossing football match in that I was in turns admiring, amused, exhilarated, contemptuous and, on one occasion, downright seething. Can't recommend it enough. Should be easy enough to track down, but if you're having trouble, you can email the publisher, Malarkey Publications.

NTFL club Ulverstone now has its own website (has had for some months now, in fact), which you'll find at  http://www.ufcrobins.com.au/.  It's still growing, but already contains a wealth of historical information and pictures, a news section, current club details, interactive features, and much more.  It's well worth a visit.
